When they were older, were they still reading, writing, and playing games? Did they have enough money to live comfortably after they retired?

Each person got a score based on these things. Then the scientists watched what happened to them over the next eight years.

The results were amazing. People who were very mentally active throughout their lives had a 38% lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease. They also had a 36% increased risk of having memory problems. People who were very mentally active developed Alzheimer’s disease about six years later than people who were not.

“Our study shows that keeping your mind active throughout your life can really help your brain health when you are older,” said scientist Andrea Zammit, PhD, a brain specialist at Rush University.

Why Eating Healthy Foods Is Important for Brain Health
